9 The Management of Patients Admitted with Head Injuries at Gozo General Hospital

Abstract Aim This audit reviewed management practice of patients admitted to Gozo General Hospital with a head injury, see whether guidelines are being followed. Method All GGH injury over twelve-month period (December 2019 – November 2020) were retrospectively reviewed. We used National Institute for Health Care Excellence (NICE) clinical guidance 176 as the standard compare to. Results 61 patients, mean age 33 years, that hospital included. CT was performed on 36 (59%) patients. According NICE guidelines, warranted in these patients: 24 (39%) had scan which may not have been indicated according guidelines. Out hospital, admission following: 49 (80%) needed admission. Conclusions retrospective review suggests significant number unnecessarily following and having an unnecessary head. The local issues causing this need be identified methods introduced better follow recommended
